पुराणों के मुताबिक जब समुंद्र मंथन किया जाना था तो भगवान विष्णु चिंता में थे | तब शक्ति योग माया प्रगट हुई तो शक्ति ने भगवान से पूछा कि प्रभु आप चिंता में क्यों हैं | तो भगवान ने कहा कि समुंद्र मंथन होने वाला है इसलिए कि आज तक असुर ही सुरों पर भारी रहे हैं | क्योंकि असुरों के पास माया और छल है वो उसके बल पर देवताओं को परास्त कर देते हैं तो देवताओं से अमृत भी छीन सकते हैं तो शक्ति योग माया ने कहा- भगवान मैं आपकी चिंता के निवारण के लिए अपने सूक्ष्म रूप में आप में वास करती हूँ तो शक्ति योग माया ने एक सुंदर मोहिनी रूप धरा और भगवान विष्णु में वास किया | वो रूप इतना सुंदर था कि सारा ब्रह्मांड उसके सम्मोहन में बंध गया और इस ब्रह्मांड में उस जैसा कोई सुंदर रूप नहीं था | उसके बाद कोई उस जैसी सुंदर स्त्री पैदा ही नहीं हो सकी और उस स्वरूप को ही विश्व मोहिनी स्वरूप कहते हैं |
इसी शक्ति का आवाहन कर भगवान ने विश्व मोहिनी रूप धरा | जब देवताओं से अमृत छीन लिया गया तो इसी स्वरूप में आकर भगवान ने देवताओं का उद्धार किया और जिस दिन यह रूप धरा उस दिन एकादशी थी, उस एकादशी को मोहिनी एकादशी के नाम से जाना जाता है | इस दिन भगवान् के इस मोहिनी स्वरूप की पूजा, व्रत और साधना करने से सभी भौतिक कामनाओं की प्राप्ति तो होती ही है और इस मोह माया के बंधन से मुक्ति भी मिल जाती है |
इस संबंध में एक कथा भी विख्यात है- एक बार एक सेठ था | उसके पाँच लड़के थे | वो सेठ बहुत धार्मिक था मगर उसका छोटा बेटा बहुत दूर व्यसनी था | उसके दुष्कर्म दिन प्रति दिन बढ़ते जा रहे थे और इस वजह से सेठ बीमार रहने लगा | फिर एक दिन उसने ऋषि शरण ली और इसकी मुक्ति का उपाय पूछा तो ऋषि कोंडीय ने उनको मोहिनी एकादशी का व्रत करने की सलाह दी तब उसने व्रत, उपासना, साधना, पूजन, अर्चन किया और इससे उन लड़कों में बहुत ही बदलाव आया और उस सेठ का जीवन भी निखर गया | मरण उपरांत विष्णु लोक की प्राप्ति हुई जोकि उच्चकोटि के ऋषियों के लिए भी दुर्लभ है | नागेंद्रानंद |
असल में मोहिनी देवी योग माया है और योग माया दो स्वरूप में है | एक तो वो जो अपने मोह माया में प्राणियों को उलझाए रखती है | देवी मोहिनी के दिव्य आशीर्वाद से ही मोह माया के बंधन से निकल सकते हैं और अपनी साधना को पूरा कर सकते हैं | बिना माया भंग हुए साधना में सफलता का शंशय रहता है | दूसरा इस जीवन में भौतिक सुखों की कामना हर एक मनुष्य को रहती है और उनकी पूर्ति के लिए भी हम मोहिनी देवी से प्रार्थना कर सकते हैं | देवी मोहिनी सर्व पापों से मुक्त कर साधक को अपूर्व सौन्दर्य और सम्मोहन प्रदान करती है और हर प्रकार के भौतिक सुख देती है | दूसरा स्वरूप प्रेम का है, अगर आप किसी से प्रेम करते हैं और उस प्रेम की प्राप्ति के लिए भी इस विश्व मोहिनी के स्वरूप की उपासना कर सकते हैं क्योंकि देवी योग माया का यह स्वरूप वास्तव में प्रेम प्रदान करने वाला है और प्रेम विवाह में सफलता प्रदान करता है क्योंकि देवी के इस स्वरूप में आकर्षण शक्ति है | जब देवी भगवान के सामने इस स्वरूप में प्रकट हुई तो भगवान के मुख से निकला कि तुम मोहिनी हो, तुम्हारे जैसा तो सुंदर कोई है ही नहीं | तो भगवान के मुख से मोहिनी शब्द निकलने से इस स्वरूप का नाम मोहिनी पड़ गया और इस स्वरूप में इतनी आकर्षण शक्ति है कि जिसको देख कर भगवान शिव भी इसके पीछे पीछे चले गए थे यह देखने कि ऐसी सौन्दर्य स्त्री पैदा कैसे हो सकती है | इसलिए ऋषियों ने इस दिन इसकी पूजा अर्चना रखी कि जीवन में सभी सुख प्राप्त किए जा सकें | नागेंरानंद |
देवी योग माया का विश्व मोहिनी स्वरूप अपूर्व सौन्दर्य प्रदान करने वाला है | इससे बोल चाल का ढंग भी बदल जाता है | उसमें गज़ब का सम्मोहन आ जाता है | वाणी में सम्मोहन और दृष्टि में सम्मोहन, यहाँ तक कि उसे जो भी देखता है उसके सम्मोहन में बंध जाता है | सभी प्राणियों में आकर्षण शक्ति का संचार देवी योग माया ही करती है और देवी के इस स्वरूप का आशीर्वाद मिलने से आकर्षण शक्ति पैदा हो जाती है | अगर आप के रिश्तों में मधुरता नहीं है, घर में पत्नी से या पति से मन मुटाव है तो भी इस साधना से उसको दूर किया जा सकता है | यह साधना आपस में प्रेम पैदा करके रिश्तों में मधुरता लाती है | इसे स्त्री और पुरुष दोनों समान रूप में कर सकते हैं | यह साधना स्त्रियों में भी सौन्दर्य और सम्मोहन पैदा करती है और उन्हे हमेशा तनाव मुक्त रखती है | यह व्यक्ति को कठिन से कठिन परिस्तिथि से निकाल देती है | इसके साथ अगर आपकी कोई बात नहीं मान रहा या उच्च अधिकारी खफा रहता है तो भी यह साधना बहुत काम आती है |
साधना विधि
एक देवी की प्रतिमा(मूर्ति) स्थापित करें | अगर देवी योग माया की मूर्ति न मिले तो दुर्गा की मूर्ति स्थापन कर लें | फिर उसे सुगन्धित द्रव्य से स्नान कराएं और उस पर इत्र और चुनरी चढ़ाएं | 16 प्रकार का श्रृंगार लें और जहां बाजोट पर लाल वस्त्र के उपर देवी की मूर्ति स्थापित करनी है और उसके सामने बाजोट पर ही 16 श्रृंगार रख देने हैं और सात किस्म की मिठाई का भोग लगाएं और एक तिल की ढेरी पर तिल के तेल का दिया लगा दें जो देवी के चित्र के ठीक सामने रखें | देवी का पंचोपचार पूजन करना है फल, फूल, धूप, दीप, नवेध, अक्षत आदि से | लाल रंग के फूल चढ़ाएं देवी को और सामने ही लाल रंग के आसान पर लाल रंग के वस्त्र पहन कर बैठें | दिशा पूर्व की तरफ मुख रखें | पूजन से पहले गुरु जी और गणेश पूजन कर आज्ञा लें और देवी का पूजन करें | फिर स्फटिक या मोती की माला से जप करें | आप एकादशी से शुरू करके 7 दिनों में जप पूर्ण कर सकते हैं |
साधना के बाद श्रृंगार का सामान या तो किसी मंदिर में कुछ दक्षिणा के साथ चढ़ा दें या किसी कन्या को दे दें | अगर संभव न हो तो नदी के पास किनारे पर छोड़ दें | साधना का समय रात को करें 8 से शुरू कर कभी भी कर लें | मंत्र संख्या 9000 है | आप चाहें एक सप्ताह में कर लें या जैसा आप उचित समझें | दिन संख्या निर्धारित नहीं है | जप 9000 करना है | आप चाहे तो 16 माला रोज कर एक सप्ताह में जप पूर्ण कर सकते हैं | इस तरीके से भी साधना पूर्ण हो जाती है | जप मधुरता से ही करें, जल्दबाज़ी न करें | इसीलिए एक सप्ताह का वक़्त दिया है | जल्दबाज़ी में कभी धीरे या तेजी से जाप करना श्रेष्ठ नहीं है क्योंकि यह साधना बहुत तीक्ष्ण है | साधना काल में ब्रह्मचर्य अनिवार्य है |

According to the Puranas, when the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) was about to take place, Lord Vishnu was anxious. Then the power Yogmaya appeared and asked the Lord why he was worried. The Lord said that the churning of the ocean was about to happen, and that the demons (asuras) had always had the upper hand over the gods until now, because the demons possess illusion (maya) and deceit, through which they could defeat the gods and even seize the nectar of immortality (amrit) from them. Yogmaya said, "Lord, to resolve your worry, I shall dwell within you in my subtle form," and Yogmaya took on a beautiful Mohini form and dwelt within Lord Vishnu. That form was so beautiful that the entire universe became bound in its hypnotic charm, and there was no form as beautiful as hers anywhere in this universe. After that, no woman as beautiful as her could ever be born again, and that very form is known as the Vishva Mohini (World-Enchanting) form.
Invoking this very power, the Lord took on the Vishva Mohini form. When the nectar of immortality had been seized from the gods, the Lord, taking on this very form, restored it to the gods, and the day he took on this form was an Ekadashi — that Ekadashi is known as Mohini Ekadashi. On this day, worshipping, fasting, and performing sadhana of the Lord's Mohini form grants the fulfilment of all material desires, and also grants liberation from the bonds of this illusion (moh-maya).
A well-known story is associated with this — once there was a wealthy merchant (seth) who had five sons. The merchant was very devout, but his youngest son was deeply caught up in vice. His misdeeds kept increasing day by day, and because of this, the merchant fell ill. Then one day, he took refuge with a sage and asked for a remedy for his son's liberation, and the sage Kaundinya advised him to observe the fast of Mohini Ekadashi. He then performed the fast, worship, sadhana, and rituals, through which a great change came over his sons, and the merchant's own life was transformed as well. Upon his death, he attained Vishnu Lok, which is rare to attain even for the highest sages. — Nagendranand
In truth, Mohini Devi is Yogmaya, and Yogmaya exists in two forms. One form keeps living beings entangled in illusion (moh-maya). It is only through Devi Mohini's divine blessing that one can break free from the bonds of this illusion and complete one's sadhana. Without breaking free from this illusion, success in sadhana remains uncertain. The second aspect is that every human being carries desires for material happiness in this life, and to fulfil these too, we can pray to Devi Mohini. Devi Mohini frees the seeker from all sins and grants them unparalleled beauty and hypnotic charm, along with every kind of material happiness. The second form relates to love — if you love someone and wish to attain that love, you can worship this Vishva Mohini form for that too, because this form of Devi Yogmaya is truly one that grants love, and grants success in love marriage, because this form of the Devi carries the power of attraction. When the Devi appeared before the Lord in this form, the Lord exclaimed, "You are Mohini — there is no one as beautiful as you," and so, from the Lord's own utterance of the word "Mohini," this form came to be named Mohini. This form carries such power of attraction that even Lord Shiva, upon seeing her, followed after her just to see how such a beautiful woman could possibly exist. This is why the sages established her worship on this day, so that all happiness in life could be attained. — Nagendranand
The Vishva Mohini form of Devi Yogmaya grants unparalleled beauty. Through it, even one's manner of speech changes. A remarkable hypnotic charm enters them. Charm enters their voice and their gaze, such that even whoever looks at them becomes bound in their hypnotic charm. It is Devi Yogmaya alone who channels the power of attraction into all living beings, and receiving the blessing of this form of the Devi generates this power of attraction. If there is no sweetness in your relationships, or there is discord between you and your wife or husband at home, this too can be removed through this sadhana. This sadhana generates mutual love and brings sweetness into relationships. Both women and men can perform this equally. This sadhana also generates beauty and hypnotic charm in women and keeps them free of stress at all times. It brings a person out of even the most difficult circumstances. Along with this, if someone isn't listening to you, or a superior remains displeased with you, this sadhana proves very useful for that too.
Method of Sadhana
Install an idol of the Devi. If an idol of Devi Yogmaya isn't available, install an idol of Durga instead. Then bathe it with a fragrant substance and offer perfume and a chunari (sacred cloth) to it. Bring sixteen kinds of adornments (solah shringar), and install the Devi's idol upon red cloth on a bajot (low wooden seat), placing the sixteen adornments before it on the same bajot, and offer seven kinds of sweets as bhog, along with a sesame-oil lamp placed atop a heap of sesame seeds, positioned directly in front of the Devi's picture. Perform the five-fold (panchopachar) worship of the Devi with fruits, flowers, incense, a lamp, naivedya, and akshat (unbroken rice). Offer red-coloured flowers to the Devi, and sit before her on a red aasan (seat), wearing red clothing. Face east. Before the worship, perform Guru and Ganesh worship and seek permission, then worship the Devi. Then chant using a crystal (sphatik) or pearl mala. You may begin on Ekadashi and complete the chanting within 7 days.
After the sadhana, either offer the adornments at a temple along with some dakshina, or give them to a young girl (kanya). If this isn't possible, leave them by a riverbank. Perform the sadhana at night, beginning anytime from 8 PM onward. The mantra count is 9,000. You may complete this within a week, or as you see fit — the number of days is not fixed. The chanting must total 9,000. If you wish, you may chant 16 rounds of the mala daily and complete the chanting within a week. The sadhana is completed this way too. Chant the mantra with sweetness, without haste. This is why a week's time has been allotted. In haste, chanting too slowly or too quickly is never advisable, because this sadhana is very intense. Observing celibacy (brahmacharya) during the sadhana is mandatory.
