रस शाश्त्र में पारद में आठ प्रकार के दोषों का वर्णन है जिन्हें पारद की आठ केंचुलियाँ भी कहा जाता है | बिना इनके शोधन के पारद का किसी भी प्रकार की औषधि में या रस कर्म में प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है क्योंकि बिना आठ संस्कार संपन्न पारद को भयंकर विष ही माना जाता है | इसी विष को आठ संस्कारों के द्वारा अमृत तुल्य बनाया जाता है जिससे पारा अपने समस्त दुर्गुणों को छोड़ कर अपने अलौकिक गुणों को प्रकाशित करता है | यही पारा आगे के संस्कारों से आच्छादित होकर रस कर्म व औषधि निर्माण में सहायक होता है |
आठ संस्कारों का विधान पूर्ण रूप से सीख कर इस क्रिया को करने से मानव के पूर्व जन्मों के पापों का भी नाश होता है | आठ संस्कार होने के पश्चात पारद में गंधक जारणा, अभ्रक जारणा, स्वर्ण जारणा लेने की अद्भुत क्षमता प्रकट हो जाती है जोकि साधारण पारद में नहीं होती | इसलिए सभी शाश्त्रों में पारद के आठ संस्कारों के महत्व को खोल कर समझाया गया है | जिससे की साधक पूर्णता को प्राप्त कर सके | यह आठ संस्कार हमें गुरु के सानिध्य में बैठकर ही पूर्ण करने चाहिए जिससे हमें इन संस्कारों में आने वाली दिक्कतों व उनके निराकरण का पता चल सके | संस्कारों में प्रयुक्त होने वाली सामग्री का पता चल सके | संस्कार करने की पूरी प्रक्रिया भली भाँती समझ आ सके | क्योंकि आठ संस्कार को ही रस शाश्त्र में इस सम्पूर्ण रस कर्म के नींव माना गया है क्योंकि अगर नींव ही मजबूत नहीं होगी तो उस पर बनने वाली इमारत की गुणवत्ता पर शक रहेगा | इसलिए यदि नींव मजबूत होगी तो आगे की क्रियाएं व संस्कार भली भाँती संपन्न हो पाते हैं, अन्यथा नहीं |

In Rasa Shastra (mercurial science), mercury is described as having eight kinds of impurities (dosha), also called the eight "sheaths" (kenchuli) of mercury. Without purifying these, mercury is never used in any medicine or alchemical (rasa) work, because unpurified, unrefined mercury — without these eight sacraments (sanskar) — is considered a fearsome poison. It is through these very eight sacraments that this poison is transformed into something equal to nectar (amrit), through which mercury sheds all its negative qualities and reveals its extraordinary properties. This same mercury, once covered by further sacraments, becomes helpful in alchemical work and the preparation of medicines.
By fully learning the method of the eight sacraments and performing this process, even the sins of a person's past lives are destroyed. After the eight sacraments are complete, mercury reveals the extraordinary capacity to absorb sulphur (gandhak jarana), mica (abhrak jarana), and gold (swarna jarana) — a capacity that ordinary mercury does not possess. This is why all the scriptures explain the importance of mercury's eight sacraments in great detail, so that the seeker may attain completeness. These eight sacraments should be completed only while sitting in the presence of a Guru, so that we may learn of the difficulties that arise during these sacraments and their remedies, become familiar with the materials used in the sacraments, and properly understand the entire process of performing them. This is because the eight sacraments are considered the very foundation of this entire alchemical work in Rasa Shastra — for if the foundation itself is not strong, the quality of the building constructed upon it remains in doubt. Therefore, if the foundation is strong, the further processes and sacraments can be completed properly; otherwise, they cannot.
